Meet our Bantam Division 1 Head Coaches

Ronnu Griffin

Coach Ronnu is honored to be joining the Newbury Park Steelers as Head Coach of the Mighty Might team! He sees coaching the Mighty Mights as an opportunity to share his passion for the game of football, and to contribute to the advancement of the youth in his community. Ronnu played receiver and corner back for El Camino Real High School, and went on to coach those same positions at El Camino after graduating. Ronnu looks forward to teaching his Mighty Might team the values of discipline, respect and teamwork he feels are important on and off the field.

Clinton Stokes

Coach Clinton coached our 2016 team to a Super Bowl victory! He coached for several years with the Steelers and during our time in the PYFL, he took two teams to the PYFL Superbowl. Clinton was also a coach in our Flag Football Division in the spring 2016.

Meet Our Freshman Division 1 Head Coach

Joe Smigiel

Coach Joe will be starting his 4th year with the Newbury Park Steelers. Last year Joe coached his 2016 Bantam team to a Super Bowl Victory! He is also Offensive Coordinator for the Newbury Park Panthers Varsity team. Joe has also coached at Fresno State and Arizona. Coach Joe graduated from Newbury Park High School in 1990. He was 1st team All CIF and 1st Team All Ventura County selection at offensive tackle for the Panthers. He went on to play at Long Beach State and after that, University of Arizona. After he graduated in 1995 he spent time with the Cleveland Browns and was later drafted by the Amsterdam Admirals of the World Football League. He also spent time with the Shreveport Pirates of the Canadian Football League.

Meet Our Junior Division 1 & Senior Division 1 head coach

Tony Thompson

Coach Tony will be starting his 7th year with the Newbury Park Steelers. He has coached two teams successfully the past four years and has taken his teams into the playoffs the past five years. Three of those seasons his teams were Conference Champions. In 2016 TOny successfully coached his Junior Black team to the Semi Finals and his Sophomore Black team to a Super Bowl Victory. Coach Tony was Running Back for University of Tennessee from 1987-90. In 1990, Tony lead the SEC in rushing with 1,261 yards en route to first-team all conference honors. He had the game winning score with 31 seconds remaining in the 1991 Sugar Bowl against Virginia. Coach Tony's passion and knowledge of the game shows in the way he coaches.

Meet Our Junior Division 2 Head Coach

Derek Sabatini

Coach Derek has been living in Newbury Park since 1978. He started playing for the Newbury Park Steelers at age nine and played high school football for the Newbury Park Panthers. His father, Bruce Sabatini coached the Newbury Park Steelers throughout the 1980's. Coach Derek is very passionate about football and honored to coach the Junior Division 2 team this year.
